The mission of The Seva Collective is to act in the spirit of Langar, to provide, healthy and nutritious food to local residents who are suffering from food insecurity. At the same time, we offer an outlet for our Sangat, and especially our youth, to channel their energy into Seva to serve those in our community who are most in need. We strive to extend the reach of the Sikh community into our surrounding neighborhoods, be visible, and be willing to assist as we endeavor to live the credo of “Sarbat Da Bhalla.”
The work of the Seva Collective began at the outset of the pandemic, in May of 2020. Moved by the difficult situation faced by so many of our neighbors, we harnessed the power of Seva to mobilize the Orange County Sikh community to serve the low-income area surrounding our local Gurdwara. Inspired to reimagine Langar in the time of COVID, we began a large-scale, drive-up grocery distribution, serving nearly 1000 families per week. Over the course of 2020 we served over 2 million pounds of groceries to vulnerable and hard-hit communities. We continue to operate regularly, serving 500 families at each distribution. We give 1-2 weeks of food for a family of five including fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, and pantry staples such as rice, pasta, and beans. During Vaisakhi and Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Gurpurab we hold gift drives in addition to the food distribution, giving out clothes, toys, and books to families and children.We also hold an annual Back to School Backpack Drive.
Along the way, we've been blessed with a vibrant group of over 400 volunteers from both inside and outside of the Sikh community. And as a result of their hard work, we’ve been honored to accept recognition from the Santa Ana Mayor’s office, our local US Congressman, local state and county officials, the Santa Ana Police Department, and the Santa Ana Unified School Board, which currently hosts us at their headquarters.
Each drive we truck in tens of thousands of pounds of healthy produce and pantry staples to fill the bellies of those who may not know where their next meal will come from. With your support, we can continue this transformational Seva for years to come.
