My name is Amreen Partap Singh Bhasin and I am honored to be one of the Sikh Coalition staff attorneys working with our clients in the case against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
The support you provide with your donations always helps our team provide free legal aid to sangat members in need. In this case, we’ve been fighting on behalf of Sikh peace officers employed by CDCR who were asked to choose between their career or their faith when their religious accommodations for beards were suddenly revoked and/or improperly denied.
Oftentimes, these kinds of cases require approaches from multiple angles. Earlier this year, our advocacy team helped write a bill to address this issue—but unfortunately, it didn’t advance through the legislature. We did, however, see a huge victory when the Department of Justice (DOJ) joined our fight and secured a court ruling to temporarily stop CDCR’s discrimination.
As our collaboration with the DOJ continues, the Sikh Coalition also persists in our own legal campaign to address this issue. Over the past year and a half, we and our legal partners and co-counsel have retained nine clients who have suffered due to CDCR’s discriminatory policy.
Our clients still deserve to have their cases heard and long-term justice secured. When you make the decision to donate, you are helping us fight against California’s largest government entity from continuing their practice of workplace discrimination. This kind of effort takes significant resources, and we cannot achieve victories at this scale without you.
Thank you for your continued investment in this shared mission.
Chardi Kala,
