Dear Supporter,
Vaheguru ji ka Khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki Fateh,
This summer, just before we were to launch our latest book (Fascinating Folktales of Punjab #9) in Punjab, we learned that Dr. Surjit Patar, renowned Punjabi writer, and poet, who had reviewed our last two books and was going to host our launch in Chandigarh had passed away. We didn't launch our book in Punjab - it felt like violating his memory. We quietly did the work though, reaching out to schools, discussing the need to preserve our language, doing storytelling sessions, and donating our books in his honor.
Dr. Patar needs no introduction, nor does this update need to be about him, but I want to share his poem that I came across today as I was trying to find inspiration for this newsletter.
The coincidence that the hero of our books (the main character of the first book, who is also on our logo) is a ਚਿੜੀ (sparrow), also happens to be the subject of this poem of his. This summer, going from community to community, school to school to carry our mission, it did feel like I (and now my daughter - who does most of the storytelling from my books now) are the little sparrows who don't give up despite the fire.
Five years ago, when we launched this book in Punjab and initiated the Engage-Punjab project, we felt like Punjabis were abandoning the Punjabi language and hoped that our initiative would bring some spark and inspiration to the children of the land.
Now it feels like Punjabis are abandoning Punjab itself. Most students and even some teachers we encountered at various schools are non-Punjabi immigrants. One thing remains a constant, though. Our books are instant love affairs for all the children and teachers alike. So we, like the little bird in the poem, keep going. And I hope that you will, too. Here is the poem, followed by select pictures from our visits to various schools this summer and one from our last visit to Dr. Patar's home. We donated close to a hundred books, this past summer, and we have you to thank for it.
