Shaping International Dialogue

At ICAAD, we believe in the power of data-driven advocacy to dismantle systemic discrimination. We've been exposing bias in judicial systems and strengthening protections for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) for over a decade. Beyond our work with local partners, this year, two of our submissions to the UN demonstrate the power of this work in shaping international dialogue on gender justice. 

Gender Stereotyping in the Courts

The first submission was to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) which is developing a new General Recommendation on Gender Stereotyping. The goal is to provide stronger guidance to governments on dismantling harmful biases that slow our progress towards gender equality. ICAAD’s submission offers case studies from our work in the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean to urge the international community to hold courts accountable for addressing gender stereotypes as a root cause of human rights violations, particularly in GBV cases.

Our TrackGBV program is featured as a model for identifying and addressing judicial bias through data-driven analysis. By strengthening global guidelines on judicial obligations, we can help ensure that courts actively reject gender stereotypes rather than reinforce them. Read our full submission here.

Grenada's Human Rights Review

Grenada is up for their Universal Periodic Review at the UN, so we submitted a stakeholder report on the government's progress, or lack thereof, on key human rights commitments. Our findings, based on our groundbreaking research, highlight critical gaps in legal protections against GBV and discrimination. By combining data analysis with survivor-centered advocacy, we provide concrete recommendations for legal and policy reforms to strengthen protections for women and girls.
